Cultural + Nature-Based Enterprises

Emama Nguda Aboriginal Corporation

Supporting Emama Nguda Aboriginal Corporation (ENAC) with business planning and investment preparation for the Indigenous-owned Jarramba Park development in Derby, WA - a new aquaculture, tourism and agriculture mixed enterprise development on country. Our support includes: creation of an investment pitch deck, business planing, development of tour blueprints, project coordination + preparation of funding proposals.

ENAC is an Indigenous-owned, not-for-profit company that operates in the Derby/Malarabah region of the Kimberley. Their mission is to create business opportunities so that Emama Nguda people can achieve financial independence and enjoy a lifestyle where culture is celebrated – both the old ways and the new. 

Kyerrwanhdha Thingalkal Land Trust

Supported Kyerrwanhdha Thingalkal Land Trust (KTLT) in Cape York with development of an On Country Enterprise Strategy and preparation of funding applications for conservation management projects and a Ranger Group.

KTLT is the trustee of traditional country that has been granted back to Traditional Owners (Mary Valley and Kalinga Station). Their aims are around restoring healthy country through conservation and cultural management and developing nature-based enterprises for jobs and income for Indigenous members. KTLT has recently been awarded Native Title.

Moompa-Awu Aboriginal Corporation

Conducted on country planning workshops with Moompa-Awu Aboriginal Corporation (MAAC) and developed a mixed enterprise business plan to support MAAC in integrated multiple revenue streams at Meripah Station (agriculture, tourism, ranger group, carbon farming). Currently supporting MAAC with cultural and nature-based tourism product development and operational readiness to launch their new tourism enterprise in 2024 via establishment of a new Healthy Country Unit.

MAAC represents the Traditional Owners of Meripah Station, part of the Wik-Wik Way Native Title Determination Area. The organisation is a united family of Traditional Owners whose purpose is to hold land, protect culture, undertake economic development and land management.

Balnggarrawarra Gaarraay Land Trust

Working with Balnggarrawarra Gaarraay Land Trust (BGLT) in Cape York, we workshopped strategies and developed a plan that will see them launch rock art tours and wilderness camping on a commercial basis in 2024. 

BGLT is the trustee of traditional country that has been granted back to Traditional Owners outside of Cooktown. Their aims are around restoring healthy country through conservation and cultural management and developing nature-based enterprises for jobs and income for members. BGLT has Native Title and already delivers the successful Melsonby Ranger program. Their goal through this project was to prepare to launch a commercial tourism enterprise offering wilderness camping and tours on country.

Angkamuthi Tribal Aboriginal Corporation

We worked with Angkamuthi Tribal Aboriginal Corporation (ATAC) to fine-tune their action plan for 2023 and then supported ATAC with implementation (funded by The Nature Conservancy). This included supporting ATAC to finalise their Healthy Country Plan and to prepare funding applications for two programs to support Angkamuthi language recording and to set up an On Country Ranger team.

ATAC are the Traditional Owners of a vast area of land in the Northern Cape York Peninsula region. The group has significantly strengthened their administrative capacity and articulated their vision for a self-determined future through this project.

Bandjin and Girramay Traditional Owners

We were engaged by the Great Barrier Reef Foundation to support Bandjin and Girramay, the Traditional Owners of Hinchinbrook Island (Munamudanamy). Together we consolidated all the available cultural and environmental information published about Hinchinbrook Island to support Traditional Owners in their decision making about the future of the island. We also reviewed possible cultural and nature-based tourism opportunities that Traditional Owners could develop on the island.

Mossman Gorge Centre

Key member of the team that developed the $24 million Mossman Gorge Centre, a cultural and ecotourism development on the edge of the World Heritage-listed Mossman Gorge, Daintree National Park in Far North Queensland.

Cultural and Nature-Based Enterprises in Indigenous Protected Areas

High-level market assessment of the potential for developing mixed enterprise models and sustainable commercial opportunities on Indigenous Protected Areas that are compatible with the conservation objectives of the land.

Led the acquisition of two culturally and environmentally significant properties (Mawonga Station, NSW and Tallaroo Station, QLD) in collaboration with the National Reserve System and multiple other partners. Supported the development of mixed conservation enterprises on those properties, including ecotourism, commercial harvesting of feral animal species and a solar energy farm.

Biofuel production on degraded agricultural land

Commercial investigation into the feasibility of producing biofuel from agave (sugar-based ethanol), pongamia and algae on already degraded, non-food producing agricultural land.

Carbon-neutral, high-welfare wool and lamb enterprise

Investigation into the potential for producing carbon-neutral, high-welfare wool and lamb at Murrayfield Station on Bruny Island, Tasmania. Implemented habitat restoration areas for threatened species and biodiversity offset areas that co-existed alongside sustainable grazing areas.

Blue Carbon Investment - The Nature Conservancy

Supported The Nature Conservancy’s Oceans + Carbon teams to conduct and write up feasibility assessment work to support project development under Australia’s new blue carbon methodology. Explored the market for prospective nature-based solutions based on coastal resilience and adaptation interventions. This project aims to generate knowledge, insights and actionable strategies to support investment into blue carbon and coastal resilience projects in Australia.

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a global environmental nonprofit working to create a world where people and nature can thrive.

Reef Credits - Palladium Group

Provided support to Palladium in the form a peer review as part of the company's bid to become a broker in the Queensland Government's Reef Credits scheme (an innovative new environmental market). Reef Credits aims to improve water quality to the Great Barrier Reef through reduced nutrient loads and reduced sediment loads.

Palladium Group is a purpose-driven business, with the stated purpose: to catalyse an enriched future for all. Palladium's Natural Capital team has the vision of a world where nature and ecosystems are transformed into a healthy state, and markets are reoriented to value natural capital and incentivise its long-term restoration.

Ecotourism Market Development in the Middle East - Emirates Nature-WWF

Preliminary positioning exercise to determine a suitable role for a major environmental NGO in the region to support the responsible and conservation-centred growth of ecotourism in the UAE, including through strategy and policy, capacity building of operators, awareness raising, direct project support and development of a community of practice.

Developed a series of “signature'“ nature-based experiences with ecotourism operators to achieve specific educational outcomes for target audiences.

Cultural Tourism Sector in the Middle East - Expo 2020, Dubai

Strategic, business and operational planning towards development of cultural attractions precinct, including pavilions and experiences themed around sustainability, international development, the SDGs and social entrepreneurship in Dubai’s newest innovation precinct, District 2020.

Policy, Programs and Partnerships

Positive Impact Tourism in Tasmania

Development of a place-based framework for positive impact tourism and a toolkit aimed at helping tourism operators better understand how to have a positive impact through their business. We led a series of co-design workshops, created the Six Dimensions of Positive Impact Tourism framework, and published a Guidebook and Toolkit for operators.

This project led to the development of a new social enterprise, The Travel Better Project, which is a wholly-owned initiative of Ethical Republic.

WWF-Australia is a leading voice for nature conservation and building a sustainable future. It is a not-for-profit organisation with a global presence.

Revenue Generating Strategies for a Conservation NGO

Supported Hinterland Bush Links (HBL) to create a revenue generating strategy to increase financial sustainability and reduce reliance on grants to support their conservation work. The goal was to support HBL with business planning and capacity building to develop a new social enterprise to generate income independent of grants.

HBL is an independent, not-for-profit community-based environmental organisation that empowers and supports local landholders to connect, restore and protect native vegetation in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Monitoring Environmental Performance in Ecotourism

Supported Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia to improve how its tourism businesses (including Ayers Rock Resort and Home Valley Station) monitor and report on environmental performance by adopting a net positive impact and natural capital accounting approach, combined with industry-relevant accreditation.

Water Quality Improvement to the Great Barrier Reef

Crocodile-Welcome Station Gully Restoration Project in Cape York, a 4-year projected funded by the Reef Trust Erosion Control Programme. Designed to mitigate gully erosion, improve water quality and reduce sediment entering the Great Barrier Reef, while also creating employment opportunities for Traditional Owners. Project is set to generate credits under the new Reef Credits Schemes.
